3/29//07: Horse Training, Ranch Work, & Crawfish Boil

Horse training has continued nonstop over the last year though I did not update the training log. Presently, I am working with a colt that (foaled on the ranch) to get him ready for halter shows this summer. Special diet and exercise considerations, grooming and training for the show ring are in full swing. In addition, several horses have been broken to ride over the last year and I am continuing to work with them to get them solid.

The ranch crawfish boil will be on May 5th this year (always Kentucky Derby day) and we are busy preparing. In 2006, we finally got the road paved that leads to our ranch and had roadside drainage ditches added. The road crews were nice enough to give us approximately 100 loads of dirt that was excavated and we will soon have a dozer out to spread and grade the dirt to facilitate drainage around the house and arenas. The dozer work will also include new culverts in strategic places and material for the driveway.

3/26//07: Website Archives Back Online

Website archives of previous months have been reactivated.
3/16//07: Stalls

Recently we managed to purchase nine galvanized horse stalls with pull out feeders and expanded metal gates. With the help of Donnie Gertson at D-Talk Ranch, we have installed seven stalls under the north border of our covered arena. After stall installation, we loaded each with about ten inches of bank sand. This absorbs waste and makes the stalls easy to keep clean.

3/13/07: Horse Treadmill Revisited

Two days ago I broke a part on the horse treadmill. It seems that whenever I need replacements parts for it, and I call the manufacturer, the prices are outrageous. Not to mention that parts are incredibly hard to find. For instance, several years ago I realized that I needed a new hydrostatic transmission, The manufacturer of the treadmill quoted me $800+. I managed to find one, the same one, not designated as a "horse treadmill part", for about $350. So anyway, I broke what I have determined is a nylon sleeved gear coupling. The quote for a new one was $60. Now this thing is basically a plastic collar that connects the motor shaft to the transmission shaft. I've seen ones that are metal, not plastic, for sale on Ebay for $10. Okay, so I realize people have to make a living - and I'm not a cheapskate, but a 600 percent markup burns me. As parts break and I replace them, I'm keeping careful notes on where to get these parts. Have a broken horse treadmill? Need some info on parts? Send me an email.

3/9/07: Taking Boarders

For the first time ever, we are taking boarders. If you are interested in housing your horse at our facility, please visit our boarding page. With a 33,000 square foot outdoor arena, a 10,000 square foot indoor riding arena, safe high quality JW Hall stalls, easy access from Hwy 288 in Rosharon, and lots of dirt roads for scenic country riding, we believ our ranch to be the ideal horse boarding facility. Additional services include horse grooming and use of our horse treadmill. We also have great areas for turnout and a round pen for horse training. Our facility is also growing. We are constantly adding new paddocks and new facilities for our customers.

3/8/07: Back Up and Running

For the last year or so this page has displayed information related to stopping the National Animal ID System (NAIS). Our fight is not over. Help fight NAIS by contacting your congressmen and representatives.

For now, I have left the Horse and Goat related pages and the Archive and Training Log pages offline. I will reinstate them as I clean them up a bit.
